Further Information

AGRICULTURE ON THE ISLAND

Fuerteventura has a dramatically arid landscape with an extremely low rainfall and therefore does not offer good conditions for successful agriculture. However, great attempts are being made at developing certain specially selected crops such as tomatoes and onions in appropriate zones on the island.

The highest peak, Pico de la Zarza, in the Southern peninsular of Jandía, only reaches a height of 807 meters and it is this lack of mountains that accounts for the low rainfall on the island. It is also the reason why winds in Fuerteventura can be strong at times, full of dust from Africa.

During recent years there has been a slight increase in rainfall over the Canary Islands improving the water situation in Fuerteventura, and this has been helped considerably by new desalination plans. The extra moisture has resulted in many spring wild flowers appearing, and the volcanic mountain slopes are becoming less desert-like and even quite green.

FOLKLORE

The folklore of the Canaries is a reminder that the archipelago has always been a bridge between Spain and Spanish America. Some songs sound Spanish, others would be more at home in Mexico or Peru. Many can be traced far back into the Canaries’ history. In fact, several centuries ago, Canarian dancing was all the range in the salons of Europe. The rhythm was catchy, the steps more daring than the customary minuet and the whole idea rather exotic.

Traditional costumes vary from island to island with that of Fuerteventura being fairly simple compared to the brightly striped skirts worn in Tenerife. The music includes boleros, fandangos, tangos and similar rhythms. The musicians play guitars, “timples” (small stringed instruments similar to ukeleles), drums, wooden flutes and sing.
